Last month, Sharon from Cupcakes and Cutlery, asked if I could help bring her dessert table ideas for a bridal shower to fruition. Since I love to do new stuff (and, honestly, I’d do anything for Sharon), I said “heck ya!”. Hop on over and read all about the “For, Like, Ever” shower she threw for Lauren of A Fabulous Fete.
Back? Ok. So my post is going to be about the mini funnel cakes I made at the event. I am not going to lie, I was intimidated by frying. (it’s scary!) But I powered through it. Ok the thing that frustrates me the most about frying is making sure the oil temp is right. I don’t have a deep fryer so I just used a pot with LOTS of oil in it. And I’ve tried using a clip on thermometer but I am always scared it’s going to unclip and fall into my boiling hot oil and then I’d be calling 911 just cause I wanted to shove delicious fried foods in my pie hole. Anyhoo. In comes my new favorite kitchen tool – my pink Thermapen! I have been wanting one of these FOR, LIKE, EVER!! 10 years maybe? Seriously, that long. Silly really. But I got one for my birthday! Woo hoo! And I love it! It’s super fast and completely accurate. And pink! It comes in a ton of colors. Like British Racing Green. And Teal! Teal people! It was a hard choice but pink won out. TANGENT!
So back to the mini funnel cakes. Sharon suggested them and already knew how she wanted to display them at the party. So my job was to find a good recipe and make some good toppings. I ended up using this recipe for Funnel Cakes after looking and comparing it with others. I liked that it didn’t use too many eggs and wasn’t fussy. I do not like fuss. I also opted for drizzling them from a squeeze bottle instead of a funnel. That made it even easier and virtually mess free. No drips on the counter. I’ll let Des and Tam’s photos do the talking.

Since this was a lovely shower, I wanted to have some lovely toppings for the funnel cakes. But not stray too far from the traditional ones. So I made a strawberry coulis, a bittersweet chocolate sauce and a creme anglaise (all my go-to recipes that I’ve been using for years but I modify as needed).

I forgot to take a pic of the finished sauces though. Drats! But you can see Lauren here squeezing some bittersweet chocolate sauce on her cake using super cute tiny squeeze bottles Sharon picked up from Think Garnish.
I made too much of the sauces. So we may (or may not) have eaten spoon fulls of it cause, you know, we didn’t want to waste it. Yea. Yep! That’s why!
Super fun shower and I didn’t mind working it. It’s always fun “working” with Sharon. Wait til I share pics of the dessert table we did for Lauren’s wedding.
